An Anatomical Exploration of Paadagata Kandara Through Cadaveric Study

Abstract

Paribhasha Shareera, a component of Rachana Shareera in Ayurveda, provides definitions and explanations of anatomical terminology essential for understanding the human body. Kandara is described as a cord-like fibrous structure and has been interpreted as a tendinous, ligamentous, or neuro fibrous structure in contemporary anatomy. Classical Ayurvedic texts describe sixteen Kandara distributed among Hasta, Paada, Greeva, and Prista. In Paada, Kandara is described in relation to Uru Mandala and Nakha Agrapraroha. The present study aimed to examine the classical description of Paadagata Kandara and identify the contemporary anatomical structure that most closely corresponds to it through cadaveric dissection and textual analysis. Four candidate structures—femoral nerve, tendo-calcaneus, great saphenous vein, and sciatic nerve—were considered using predefined anatomical criteria: proximal origin, continuity toward the distal extremity, terminal distribution, and functional relevance to movement. The sciatic nerve showed the closest overall anatomical correspondence among the structures considered. However, this interpretation represents a conceptual anatomical correlation and should not be considered an exact equivalence. Further studies using larger cadaveric series, histological methods, and comparative textual analysis are required.
